Kentucky: Council on Postsecondary Education

Paul E. Patton, of Pikeville, served as governor of Kentucky from 1995-2003.  One of Patton’s accomplishments as governor was to help reform higher education in Kentucky and the passage of the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997. As governor, Patton also served as chair of the Southern Regional Education Board, the Southern Growth Policies Board, the Education Commission of the States, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the President’s Commission on the High School Senior Year, the National Education Goals Panel, the Democrat Governor's Association, and the National Governor's Association. He has served as county judge executive of Pike County.  During his tenure as lieutenant governor from 1991-1995 he also served as secretary of economic development.  He is currently a distinguished visiting lecturer in public policy and leadership at Pikeville College.  Governor Patton holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky.  His term on the Council expires December 31, 2013.
