STEM Task Force Study Groups
From April through December 2007, the STEM Study Groups have been meeting to develop strategic action plans for the eight recommendations adopted in March 2007. Links to the reports submitted for Recommendations # 1 through # 7 of the STEM Study Groups are listed below. During the 2007 Special Legislative Session, legislation was passed regarding Recommendation # 8 about energy sustainability. Kentucky Science and Technology Center has been selected to administer Kentucky’s new $5 million Alternative Fuel and Renewable Energy Fund developed and funded through the Cabinet for Economic Development’s Department of Commercialization and Innovation.
Thank you to all of the STEM Task Force members who participated on the Study Groups and particularly the respective Chairs of each group. The assistance by CPE staff liaisons for each of the groups has been extremely helpful to the production of the respective reports. Based upon the STEM Task Force recommendations, the Council on Postsecondary Education developed a STEM budget proposal that includes a $5 million request to provide preliminary funding for the first seven recommendations of the STEM Task Force.
Kentucky has received a $10,000 Education to Workforce planning grant from the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) to partially facilitate the next phase of work by the STEM Task Force. Future activities include a February 6, 2008 joint meeting of the STEM Task Force and key legislators in Frankfort.
