Tuning identifies what a student should know and be able to do when awarded a degree — associate's, bachelor's, or master's — in a discipline. Kentucky has begun tuning the disciplines of biology, business, elementary education, nursing, and social work. Our work is funded by Lumina Foundation for Education.
Tuning, a faculty-driven process, was developed in Europe to bring consistency to the European Union's numerous and distinct higher education systems. In the E.U., the countries involved in tuning agreed on comparability of degrees at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, leading to a better, shared understanding of what a degree means. Since tuning’s beginnings, it has spread to other parts of the world.
As a result of tuning, students, faculty, counselors, parents, employers, and other stakeholders will know what skills students should have at each level, and the value of each degree is clear.
