    The Executive Committee of the Council on Postsecondary Education approved an employment agreement today for its incoming interim president, Dr. Richard Crofts, the former commissioner of higher education in both Mississippi and Montana.

  • 14 EARN DEGREES THROUGH PROJECT GRADUATE; 232 ENROLL

    Project Graduate teams at Kentucky’s public universities have helped 14 adults return to college to earn their bachelor’s degree this spring, according to preliminary data gathered by the Council on Postsecondary Education. Three more Project Graduate students will graduate this summer and 232 students have enrolled for summer or fall classes.

    Kentucky’s Internet2 Initiative was recognized as the “Most Innovative Use of Technology in Education” at the Commonwealth Office of Technology’s third annual Kentucky Digital Summit. As part of the “Best of Kentucky” awards, Kentucky’s Internet2 initiative was chosen from nearly 50 possible nominees for making outstanding information technology contribution to the public sector.

    Students and teachers from across the state joined state leaders on the steps of the Capitol this morning for a rally to launch KnowHow2GOKy, a multiyear, public service media outreach designed to encourage more Kentuckians to plan, enroll and succeed in college.

    The Council on Postsecondary Education will launch a statewide outreach tomorrow that uses warrior-like characters—named Algebra II, Biology and Foreign Languages—to challenge middle school and high school students to take the “tough” classes they need to prepare and succeed in college.
  • DR. RICHARD CROFTS TO SERVE AS CPE INTERIM PRESIDENT

    The Council on Postsecondary Education hired a former Kentuckian with extensive experience in higher education administration in several states to serve as its interim president. Dr. Richard A. Crofts of Palmetto, Fla., will serve the Council until a permanent president is hired, a search anticipated to last six to eight months.

    Kentucky’s public colleges and universities have made steady progress in improving the status of African Americans in postsecondary education, according to a report that will be presented tomorrow to the Council on Postsecondary Education at its meeting in Frankfort.
  • FORMER KENTUCKIAN AND HIGHER ED ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDED TO SERVE AS CPE INTERIM PRESIDENT

    The Council on Postsecondary Education’s search committee for an interim president will recommend Dr. Richard A. Crofts, of Florida, to the Council at its meeting on Friday. If approved by the Council, Crofts will begin his duties as interim president in mid-June and serve for at least six months while the Council conducts a national search for a permanent president. Crofts will not be a candidate for the permanent position.

    Today I announce my resignation as president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. I do this for one reason: in the foreseeable future, it would be necessary to devote excessive time and effort to unproductive activities, denying me the satisfaction of fruitful work.
  • COUNCIL TO SCRUTINIZE TUITION PROPOSALS

    Brad Cowgill, president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, today said that because of changes in the economy that are hurting Kentucky families and putting college loans at risk, a strong consensus has emerged among Council members that favors a conservative approach to tuition growth in order to maintain college affordability and progress toward the state’s Double the Numbers goal.
