GEAR UP Kentucky selects 29 schools
GEAR UP Kentucky announced that 29 schools have been selected to participate in a new $26.9 million college-readiness grant award. The announcement was made earlier today at a launch rally at Holmes High School in Covington.
GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, anticipates serving 10,000 Kentucky students from low-income schools over the life of the six-year federal grant. The program serves entire cohorts of students and follows them throughout high school.
Hundreds of students from Holmes Middle School, Newport Middle School and Bellevue High School attended the rally and pledged to graduate high school ready for college-level work.
"I am so excited by this event and encouraged by the hopes and dreams that I perceive on the face of each student,” said Yvonne Lovell, executive director. “Today, I am reminded of the enormous potential for our next generation of leaders, doctors, teachers, lawyers and engineers.
“This summer I traveled to every school represented in this project today and in every case the educators I met with were committed to ensuring that their students successfully graduate from high school and excel in postsecondary education. Today, I've invited my partners and collaborators to unite with GEAR UP Kentucky and form a community of advocates whose only purpose is ‘every student prepared for college success’.”
