  • Eastern Kentucky University
    It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

    It Takes a Village to Raise a Child was created to address the need for intervention and to assist with the matriculation of African American students from the middle school system to the high school system and into postsecondary education. This comprehensive program exposes students to academic enrichment activities, develops their social skills, introduces them to cultural activities and encourages parental involvement. The program is open to students in grades 6 - 8 in the Madison County school system and is scheduled during the summer for a week after the closing of the middle school system.

    The To Care Program offers students in the Frankfort and Franklin County service area assistance in their transition from the primary grades to middle school and from middle school to high school. The program offers skill enrichment activities with special emphasis on African Americans in math, computer technology, reading and history. Workshops for parents are also provided.

    The Governor's Minority Teacher Education Program (GMSCPP) consists of a one-week residential experience for fifty high school and middle school students. Students participate in English, math, science, computer, career planning, and Black history classes, as well as social activities. Students are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Transportation to and from the MSU campus, meals, classes and social activities are provided at no expense to the students.

    The Governor's Minority Student College Preparation Program at Murray State University is a program designed to enhance higher education opportunities for minority students in the Paducah, Mayfield and Calloway County areas. The curriculum offers programming designed to generate interest in career education to promote an early understanding of secondary and postsecondary level of education.

  • Northern Kentucky University
    Project Aspire

    Project Aspire offers assistance to underrepresented minority groups in their transition from middle to high school and from high school to college. Workshops are offered that focus on college selection, admission procedures, preparing for the ACT, financial aid, and computer and technological developments. The academic enrichment program is held one Saturday each month during the school year with a one-week summer day camp. Special programs are also available for participants' parents.

    Minority Student College Awareness/YMCA Black Achievers and
    Realizing Academic Potential (Project RAP)

    The Minority Student College Awareness/YMCA Black Achievers program provides activities of early intervention to enhance the postsecondary aspirations and success rate of upper elementary, middle and high school students. The programs emphasize integrated mathematics, science, language arts, and computer technology and include visits to UK campus, cultural activities, field trips.
    Activities of the Realizing Academic Potential (Project RAP) program focuses on students at Winburn Middle School and includes activities related to academics, career awareness presentations by professionals, college campus visits, field trips and parent involvement seminars.

    Governor's Minority Student College Preparation

    The university coordinates the early intervention efforts of public schools, higher education institutions and community groups through workshops for students, parent groups, tutorial centers and recognition programs.
    • Collegiate Cadets (with Lincoln Foundation and Louisville Urban League)
      Fifty middle school students receive academic support, counseling and mentoring in an academic enrichment program.
    • Youth Toward Excellence Program
      Middle school students from Jefferson County are offered assistance in basic academic skills, including reading, tutoring, counseling, study skills, mentoring, home visits and parental counseling. Sessions are held during the school year culminating in an intense one-week summer residential program.
    • Health Careers Adventure Program
      The program is focused in the west Louisville area and provides sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students exposure to various health professions through a four week structured summer academic enrichment program, monthly enrichment and follow-up, and personal development seminars/workshops.

Junior high and middle school students from Warren, Barren, and Simpson counties participate in enrichment programs designed to promote academic achievement, career and cultural awareness, leadership skills. Students are encouraged to establish long-term educational goals beyond high school. The goals of Project Aims are accomplished through Saturday enrichment programs, a summer educational and cultural enhancement component, and a summer academic camp.

    The Program Excel Summer Enrichment Experience was designed to increase awareness of the benefits and value of postsecondary education. The program also aims to prepare underrepresented minority groups to be successful in high school and college level work and to persist to high school and college graduation. The non-residential summer program offers academic enrichment activities (math, reading, computer science, and multicultural education) and includes a parent workshop to foster participation in the students' academic decisions.

    Summer Enrichment Program is a three-week, non-residential program for middle and junior high school students from Henderson and Union counties. Students are offered enrichment in math, reading, and science. Culturally based experiences are a part of the curriculum designed to enhance self-esteem. Program coordinators track academic progress and attendance of student participants during the following academic school year.

    Let's C.H.I.L.L. Program

    The Let's C.H.I.L.L. Program provides tutorial services in reading, math, and science for students in grades 6 - 8. It is a four-week daytime program focusing on improving self-esteem, career awareness, money management, and pursuit of postsecondary education at graduation.
